“Growing Together”
‘’Naku te rourou, Nau te rourou ka ora ai Te iwi’’ – With your food basket and my food basket the people will thrive.
Aim:
To empower people and reduce poverty locally by our community working together to provide healthy nutrition and develop character.
The Concept:
Growing community gardens where people turn up at a set time/ place and do an hour assisting with the garden & receive some garden produce in return. For those that make a regular commitment and contribution to the garden (eg1hr 2X a week) they are rewarded at the end of the week with a meat koha (donated by local farmers, hunters, businesses). The purpose being to encourage and develop character and good work habits – turning up on time, working for a set period, regular commitment, service of community, teamwork.
Manunui Community Garden and Farm:
We have started up a community garden in Manunui in the paddock beside the rugby grounds. The Manunui Hall will be utilised as a base and meeting place. We also intend upon running a community farm to support the gardens. Farmers would be able to donate livestock towards the meat Koha program and these livestock could be raised on the farmland to provide a regular supply of meat throughout the year. The farm would trial and showcase regenerative agriculture practices and measure changes in soil health over time.
An Integrated Commercial/Social Model:
We intend to investigate the market for fresh local produce within Taumarunui township. The long-term plan is to have the community garden and farm running self-sufficiently with local food businesses purchasing garden produce and helping finance the community gardens. Having a commercial aspect to the model helps to ensure the continuity of the project and make it resilient so it is not dependent upon donations/funding. It also enables local food businesses to support locally grown produce, be part of addressing difficult social issues and help create a better community.
Benefits to Community:
Bringing people together and connecting people in need with those who can assist them physically, spiritually, mentally & emotionally. Empowering people and helping them realise that they can contribute something. Encouraging community volunteerism and helping prepare people better for employment. Reducing poverty by providing nutritious food to those who otherwise would struggle to afford regular fresh vegetables and meat.
“Na, ano te pai, ano te ahuareka o te nohonga o nga teina, o nga tuakana i runga i te whakaaro kotahi” - Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for people to dwell together in unity!
